Real-time algorithm enabling high dynamic range imaging and high frame rate exploitation for custom CMOS image sensor system implemented by FPGA with co-processor

We present results from a prototype CMOS camera system implementing a multiple sampled pixel level algorithm (“Last Sample Before Saturation”) in real-time to create High-Dynamic Range (HDR) images that approach the dynamic range of CCDs. The system is built around a commercial 1280 × 1024 CMOS image sensor with 10-bits per pixel and up to 500 Hz full frame rate with higher frame rates availabl...

Radiation Tolerance of CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors with Self-Biased Pixels

CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) are proposed as a technology for various vertex detectors in nuclear and particle physics. We discuss the mechanisms of ionizing radiation damage on MAPS hosting the the dead time free, so-called self bias pixel. Moreover, we discuss radiation hardened sensor designs which allow operating detectors after exposing them to irradiation doses above 1 Mrad.

A High Resolution CMOS Imager with Active Pixel using Capacitively Coupled Bipolar Operation

The active pixel sensor technology promises high performance than conventional CCD imagers. This paper reports a new high resolution CMOS imager with one transistor active pixel sensing based on capacitorcoupled bipolar action. The base capacitor is pulsed negatively for image integration and positively for image sensing. The pixel size is 5.9um x 5.9um (on 0.8um design rule). The prototype ima...

Analysis of Temporal Noise in CMOS Photodiode Active Pixel Sensor

Temporal noise sets the fundamental limit on image sensor performance, especially under low illumination and in video applications. In a CCD image sensor, temporal noise is primarily due to the photodetector shot noise and the output amplifier thermal and 1 noise. CMOS image sensors suffer from higher noise than CCDs due to the additional pixel and column amplifier transistor thermal and 1 nois...
